ABOUT THE ARTIST
BUSCH was transplanted from his historic Bayou St. John studio in New Orleans to Las Vegas, Nevada by events spawned by Hurricane Katrina.  He is a committed and active self-taught artist, who paints from the soul and evokes varied emotions throughout his neo-expressionistic and abstract paintings.

His acrylic on canvas paintings are imbued with energy and emotive nuance through the complex use of color; congruent color that reveals a dense surface of dimensionality and depth with balance and wholeness. Full of life and intense color, he defines his style and work as "the purest expression of his tremendous positive spirit infused by his deep yearning to create, inspire and provoke thought." His visual sophistication and energetic painting style has been met with wide critical acclaim.

Busch was born in Rochester, New York and raised on a small farm just outside the urban industrial center. Like one of his artistic influences, Jasper Johns, he attended school at the University of South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies. He subsequently earned his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University School of Law (New Orleans, Louisiana).

An attorney by trade, Busch has made the smooth transition from the analytical left brain to the creative right brain. He finds painting to be both a respite from the world and, more importantly, an outlet for his strong and determined passion and desire to create. Other inspirations for Busch include Francesco Clemente, Alice Neel, Elaine de Kooning, and Basquiat, among others.

This is his third exhibition at d.o.c.s. gallery. His paintings have been shown in New York, Chicago, and Vail, among others. His work is sold, commissioned and collected nationally, as well as internationally, and he has been exhibited at the Alexandria (Louisiana) Museum of Art and New Orleans Contemporary Art Center.  His work was also featured in the Canadian television show "My Global Adventure", which was televised across the globe to more than 300 million viewers.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

These paintings simply capture my journey over the last 2 years.  My family and I have moved often over the last 2 years, starting with an evacuation to Jackson, MS then to Florida, and onto New Hampshire, and from there Massachusetts and then across country to Colorado and now I call Las Vegas home.  For much of the journey, it was difficult to find the spirit, energy and time to paint, let alone the place to paint.  For I felt like a hitchhiker - thumb extended, always looking for the next ride to the next place; hoping and praying that it would provide my family with the connection we had previously known.  I had lost my studio and, more importantly, found I had disconnected from my muse.

I regained a studio in Las Vegas in January of this year and began the process of re-connecting with my muse.  This entire series was painted with the thumb of my right hand; nothing more, nothing less. Layers upon layers of paint were applied simply by my right thumb to give each and every painting the depth, complexity and transformative dimension that each painting needed in order to become complete.

Re-connecting with my muse in this most fundamental, yet unorthodox manner not only represents the journey I undertook but also has enabled me to finally make sense of and peace with my journey. Two years ago, my brother shared with me the commencement speech given by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computers and Pixar Animation Studios, at Stanford University in 2005.  In that speech, Jobs astutely advised that "you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.  So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.  You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.

This exhibition is dedicated to my wife, Kellie Ann Panus.
