ABOUT THE ARTIST

BUSCH was transplanted from his historic Bayou St. John studio in New Orleans, LA as a result of Hurricane Katrina and has since traveled a path which has taken him from Boston, Massachusetts to Eagle, Colorado to Las Vegas, Nevada to, finally, his newest home, Fairfield, Connecticut.  He is a committed and active self-taught artist, who paints from the soul and evokes varied emotions throughout his neo-expressionistic and colorful, abstract paintings.

His acrylic on canvas paintings are imbued with energy and emotive nuance through the complex use of color; congruent color that reveals a dense surface of dimensionality and depth with balance and wholeness. Full of life and intense color, he defines his style and work as "the purest expression of his tremendous positive spirit infused by his deep yearning to create, inspire and provoke thought." His visual sophistication and energetic painting style has been met with wide critical acclaim.

Busch was born in Rochester, New York and raised on a small farm just outside the urban industrial center. Like one of his artistic influences, Jasper Johns, he attended the University of South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies. He subsequently earned his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University School of Law (New Orleans, Louisiana).  Despite his intellectual pursuits and degrees, Busch is first and foremost an artist.

A successful sports and entertainment attorney and marketer by trade who has represented the likes of superstar tennis icons Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf as well as 3-time Indy 500 and 2007 "Dancing With the Stars" champion, Helio Castroneves and an NFL Pro Bowl player, among others, Busch has made the smooth transition from the analytical left brain to the creative right brain. He finds painting to be both a respite from the world and, more importantly, an outlet for his strong and determined passion and desire to create. Other inspirations for Busch include Francesco Clemente, Alice Neel, Elaine de Kooning, and Basquiat, among others.

This is his fourth exhibition at d.o.c.s. gallery. His paintings have been shown in New York, Chicago, and Vail, among other places and his work is sold, commissioned and collected nationally and internationally.  Additionally, Busch's provocative paintings have been exhibited at the Alexandria (Louisiana) Museum of Art, the New Orleans Contemporary Art Center and have also been featured in the Canadian television show "My Global Adventure", which was televised across the globe to more than 300 million viewers.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Oscar Wilde maintained in his 1889 essay “The Decay of Lying” that life imitates art far more than art imitates life.  The colorful, expressionistic abstract paintings featured in this exhibition certainly support such a proposition. Life experience offers many twists, turns, ups, downs, pit stops, landing spots, deep roots, no roots, imperfection, joy, and sadness. The minute one becomes settled in a place, position or thought, change occurs. Are you open to the change? Can you embrace the change?

This series of paintings emerged organically through a journey filled with incidental happenings. Each painting represents both a process and a pace—both deliberate yet frenetic. The colors represent the energy in the moment of life and seek to capture the feeling of experiencing an incidental and transformative moment. While the places may look, feel or seem familiar, change abounds. Being present in the moment allows one to observe the minor or casual differences that surround us daily. And, it is those incidental moments that enable one to evolve, twist, turn and shape their journey through life.

This exhibition is dedicated to my sons—Jake and Liam. May they both have the wisdom, courage and patience to accept and embrace their own Incidental Journey.
