ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mark Chatterley is a Williamston, Michigan sculptor. He received his BFA and MFA from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. This exhibition focuses on his hand built ceramic figures.  Each ceramic piece is unique, with the surfaces ranging from a shiny metallic to a crusty texture reminiscent of rusted metal or weathered stone.

This is his eighth solo show in New Orleans. He has shown throughout the United States, as well as, in Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand. His works are in public and private collections around the world.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Everything is either moving toward or away from nothingness.

Life, death, creation and destruction, this is the world I find myself in.

I want my art to echo these thought, everything in a state of flux, changing and reforming. A sense of decay, along with life. Nothing is permanent and nothing stays the same.

I try to show thoughts and feelings of the human condition. Finding the beauty in the malformed and the acceptance of the inevitable.

I am doing work of our time for our time, even though I look to the past, to the dead for inspiration.
