Adam Farrington is a New Orleans multi-disciplined artist who grew up with his time split between upstate New York, with plenty of open space to tinker and build projects, and Long Island, with easy access to New York City's wealth of galleries and museums. Shortly after getting his Bachelors of Fine Arts from State University of New York Purchase College in 1993, he moved to New Orleans, where he has attained ‘common-law’ status as a Southern artist. His influences include artists such as Alexander Calder, Dennis Oppenheim and William Christenberry. His work has been exhibited widely in New Orleans and in New York. He has been featured in numerous exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Center. He has done commissions for SONY and the House of Blues and is widely collected locally and nationally. This is first solo exhibition at the gallery. Click here to visit the artist's web site. IN HIS OWN WORDS I'm drawn to objects with a history, like the kind of things you'd find at a flea market or on a river bank; Objects that have become unique because of wear and the loss of context. These attributes are associated with the passage of time, so, the older a thing, the more abstract it can become. With this recent work, I have been focusing on the physical qualities of color, texture and form that I most appreciate, rather than emulating specific objects that tend to embody this aesthetic. I created these pieces without the intent to illustrate a specific object or idea, so I arrived at the titles in the same way a person might see images in passing clouds. I believe the role of an abstract work is to act as a screen upon which the audience can project its own meanings and ideas. |
