Eileen O’Donnell is a New Orleans sculptor and cinematographer. She has a BA from St. Joseph’s University and a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design, both in Philadelphia. Click here to visit the artist's web site. IN HER OWN WORDS I sculpt clay vessels in the shapes of what could be considered seeds, funerary urns, or incense burners. Inspired by the burial rituals of ancient cultures, these sculptures are my attempt to confront death, revenge, isolation, fear, and captivity--and to honor those elements of life that will remain mysteries. By using clay, the human figure, animals and nature as my visual language, I feel connected to the people of the past who touched the same earth, and confronted the same realities of human experience that we do today. Creating this work is compelling for me. I have to honor this mystery of life--for all of its beauty, loss, suffering and moments of seeming grace. Showing my work completes this feeling of connectedness to the world and my community. My goal is to continue to create sculpture, and more deeply explore life and what it means to be human. |
