An early childhood predilection for her father’s tools gave way to a myriad of experiences in the automotive realm…mechanic, detailer, UPS driver, and her favorite, race car driver. She initially enrolled in the U of M to become an astrophysicist, but after 3 years in that field of study, changed her major to sculpture. After graduating, she moved to New Orleans and has a studio in the Bywater area. She most recently was one of seven artists selected for the Louisiana Biennial at the New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center. This is her first exhibition at the gallery. IN HER OWN WORDS Art is a statement about how the human mind relates to the cosmos. One can never make a statement about the cosmos itself—but only about how our senses perceive it, and about how our symbols and languages represent it. Visual language is a fluid, dynamic and adaptable form of communication. This communication is capable of transmitting an individual’s relationship to, and perception of, reality, both instantaneously and irrevocably. In life, and in art, I am interested in fundamental contradictions of existence; the disparity between truth and myth, the real and imagined, and what is considered beautiful and what is not. The reality outside me is in constant contradiction to the reality in my mind. The only way for me to reconcile these contradictions is to make sculpture. |
