Shae Freeman is a New Orleans sculptor originally from Minnesota, where she received her BA in Sculpture and Native American Studies from the University of Minnesota. An early childhood predilection for her father’s tools gave way to a myriad of experiences in the automotive realm…mechanic, detailer, UPS driver, and her favorite, race car driver. She initially enrolled in the U of M to become an astrophysicist, but after 3 years in that field of study, changed her major to sculpture. After graduating, she moved to New Orleans and has a studio in the Bywater area. She was one of six artists selected for the 2006 Louisiana Biennial at the New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center and she won ‘Best in Show’ at the 2009 Grand Isle Juried Exhibition. She has given blacksmithing demonstrations at LSU and has been a visiting artist at the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. This is her third exhibition at the gallery. IN HER OWN WORDS Macrocosm and microcosm is an ancient Greek Neo-Platonic schema of seeing the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos, from the largest scale (macrocosm or universe-level) all the way down to the smallest scale (microcosm or sub-sub-atomic or even metaphysical-level). The mathematical expression of this theory is the golden ratio, which can be observed in many parts of the ordered universe both large and small. The Celts, Vikings, Incas, Aborigines and many other ancient peoples recognized this ratio in the natural world. Artist throughout the centuries have employed the golden ratio (Leonardo Da Vinci exemplifies this) in their work to achieve aesthetic harmony. From the golden ratio dictating proportion, to Fibonacci sequences dictating form, this body of work explores the math made manifest in sculptural structure. |
